Translated job-seeker websites to attract skilled workers - Sticky ...

BRITISH COLUMBIA / In an attempt to better attract the attentions of skilled foreign workers, the province announced Friday the launch of five foreign-language micro-sites on the WelcomeBC.ca website - "the one-stop source for people considering moving to B.C. and for those who have recently arrived," according to a media release.

Translated in Korean, Punjabi, Spanish, French and Chinese, the new micro-sites (the first of their kind in Canada, the government says) are formatted "to best serve prospective and recent immigrants."

For example, the Korean micro-site is more text-heavy than a typical North American site and uses a mixture of South Korean text and English pronouns.

There was no further word on what that actually means, but Ida Chong, Minister of Regional Economic and Skills Development, is quoted in the release stating: "Skilled immigrants are much more likely to access and benefit from this information when it is available in their own language and in a format familiar to them."
The micro-sites also use geo-targeting, which means WelcomeBC.ca can detect if a visitor is using an IP address from another country and then use that information to automatically redirect them to the relevant micro-site. Users visiting the site from their phone or handheld device will be automatically redirected to the mobile site that loads more quickly and is easier to read on small screens.
