Every now and then on a Saturday morning, first thing – 7:00 A.M. – we like to go to Sam’s Club. And we go there at that hour for one primary purpose: fresh flowers. While I also frequent other stores to buy flowers, there is one particular reason we like going to Sam’s: his name is Jim.
Our family first met Jim earlier this year when we needed some help picking and ordering flowers for our son’s wedding rehearsal dinner. Jim told us exactly what we needed and what we didn’t. He wasn’t pushy or overbearing in trying to make us buy more than we wanted or not what we wanted. He listened carefully to what we were thinking and came up with some concrete ideas to support our request. And just as he had promised, the flowers were sensational!
Jim is nice.
Jim is an attentive listener.
He makes people laugh.
He knows a lot about his product.
No question to him is ever stupid or silly or trite.
He doesn’t appear to know the word rude.
He is patient.
He offers thoughtful suggestions.
He isn’t a know-it-all, though I am delighted by all he knows.
He does good great work.
He seems happy.
He smiles.
He is upbeat and cheerful.
He acts genuinely glad to see us.
He is helpful to all people.
His attire is casual – blue jeans and work shirt.
He is perhaps beyond “traditional” retirement age – whatever that means.
He inspires with his interest.
His energy is endless.
He is customer-focused with a capital C!
His enthusiasm is evident.
His caring is clear.
His positive attitude is admirable.
His kindness is genuine.
The courtesy he extends to customers is extraordinary.
The way he values and respects the store’s patrons is exemplary.
The love he has for his work abounds.
As a job seeker, I hope you have Jim’s zest for life ever-present in your job search!
When you go to your next interview, I hope you will deliver as much passion to the hiring manager and to the employer as Jim consistently delivers to his job and to his customers.
