When I was involved in Toastmasters International, one of the things I loved about it was the TABLE TOPICS™ component. With TABLE TOPICS™, you have no idea what question might be asked of you – much like job interviewing. Last evening at a speaking competition, I was once again reminded of TABLE TOPICS™ when the contestants were asked to do an impromptu speech. The moderator provided each contestant with a topic to address. Imagine that in your next job interview, the Hiring Manager asks you a series of questions based on antonyms, such as:
Tell us if you have an abundant or a scarcity mentality and why?
Are you an all – nothing employee and why?
Do you look backward – forward and please tell us why?
Share with us if you are a candidate who prefers to begin – end?
What is your best – worst case scenario?
Would you describe your management style as one of blame – praise and why?
Is your perspective broad – narrow and tell us why?
Are you a can or can’t sort of leader and why?
Would you describe your brand as common – rare and share details?
Will your brand decrease – increase our ROI and share with us how you will do so?
Would you describe your decision-making as definite – indefinite by giving us specific examples?
Is your supervisory style one of discourage – encourage and help us understand more about this?
Do you arrive early – late on a consistent basis and please state your position, either way?
Would your colleagues say you work fast – slow and why would they say that?
Are you a leader who forgets – remembers and why?
Would your immediate supervisor describe you as someone who gets – gives and why?
If I contact your customers, will I discover that you are honest – dishonest in your interactions?
Would your team mates describe you as someone who is interesting – uninteresting and why?
If you have to choose between join – separate, which one would you choose and why?
Do you prefer the known – unknown and help us understand your thinking about this?
Are you valued as a leader – follower and why?
As a worker, are you messy – neat and what makes others think so?
As a professional, do you consider yourself more – less and why?
Is your general demeanor one of never – always and why?
Do you prefer new – old and give us examples?
Would you be more likely to say no – yes to change and innovation and why?
Does change turn you on – off and please say more about that?
Will your colleagues find your door open – closed and why?
Do you dwell more in the past or the present and share with us some specifics, please?
Are you the push or the pull and why?
Would your supervisors say you are the question or the answer and how so?
If we acquire you, are we acquiring a product that is rare or common and convince us now?
Would others describe your personality as real or fake and why would they say so?
Tell us about your biggest success – failure to date and what you have learned.
Are you a contributor who will take or who will give and why?
Will your peers describe you as an individual who is transparent or opaque and why?
Convince the team here today why you are unqualified and then convince us why you are qualified to do this job.
Of these two words, which one do you choose: virtue – vice and why?
Tell us your best story about these two words: win – lose.
Are you the yes or the no for this job and please defend your choice?
As a candidate, are you the zenith or the nadir and tell us why?
