“I hated every minute of training. But I said, don’t quit. Suffer now and live the rest of your life as a champion.”
~ Muhammad Ali
In order to win medals and enjoy the limelight in their respective sport, every single competitor at the London Olympics has had to endure some kind of pain before reaching the event:
InjuriesFinancial problemsWaking up at 5am daily to trainLosingSelf-doubtRidicule from friends and family (“why don’t you get a proper job?”)Media intrusionStaying away from ‘treat’ foods and drinksScrewing up a race or competitionYet more injuriesMissing out on fun times with family and friends‘No pain, No gain’
For every gold medal that Michael Phelps, Usain Bolt or ‘Team GB’ have won this last week, they’ve endured countless set backs and painful moments along the way.
The same applies to any of us in any profession.
Unless you’re willing to do the things that others won’t and endure the pain and sacrifices that others avoid, you’ve little chance of getting the results you want.
Hardly rocket science right? But in our modern culture of instant gratification, people often forget that you have to put in the work, sacrifices and suffer the pain before you get the rewards.
Here are 3 questions to leave you with:
1. What’s the prize?
What’s the one thing you really want to achieve in your career over the next 12 months?2. What’s the ‘pain’ you need to deal with to get there?
Like many people, there is every chance you’ve been avoiding that pain.3. What can you do in the next week to push through the pain and accelerate your progress?
Whether your goal is to find a new job, shift careers, get promoted, thrive in your freelance business or simply be more effective in your current role, just remember Muhammad Ali’s words at the top of the page.
Make the sacrifices now and suffer some pain along the way. But no matter how tough it gets, don’t quit – keep your eye on the prize and keep believing that you’ll come out of the other side and be a champion (however you define it).
