From time to time, clients ask how I got “my nerve up” to write a blog. I mean, isn’t it terrifying to do such a thing? I give full credit to Louise Fletcher, co-founder of Career Hub, for helping me “get my nerve up” and believe that I could write a blog post!
Since March of 2006, what I have learned is that it is not terrifying and as it turns out, it is as easy as 1 – 2 – 3 – if (big IF) you allow yourself to think that and then, actually believe it!
Last winter, I recall speaking to a group of “in transition” professionals interested in blogging. One of the questions from the audience was this:
“So, how do you decide what to write about?”
Here’s a little trick I find of value when I am stumped and my mind goes blank as it relates to blog post ideas:
Think of one word – not 20 – just one.
For example, the other day I was thinking about Ryan Lochte. Well, that’s two words, but you get the idea whether it’s one word of two – the point is to start somewhere with some specific thought that pops into your mind.
The reason I was thinking about Ryan Lochte is that I had just watched a story on television about him – flipping tractor tires as a part of his work-out routine. Really?
Back to one word or two for a blog post.
Inspiration.
That’s one word.
Ryan Lochte inspires me.
Lolo Jones inspires me.
See how easy it would be to write a post about inspiration?
If you have been thinking about starting a blog and do not know where to start or what to write – start small.
Start with one (or two) words.
Don’t worry about writing “the perfect post.”
Jump in and do.
Haven’t you thought long enough about writing that post?
How about doing something differently today?
How about grabbing a napkin while you’re sipping your latte, or Dew, or water or whatever and write one word on it.
Not five words – not three – just one.
And as you go about your day, convert that one word into one line.
And add a few more lines.
Then a few more words.
And pretty soon, voilà, you will have written your very first blog post – 150 words or less will be just fine!
One word.
That’s all it takes to get started!
Simple as 1 – 2 – 3.
