Full-time positions are like the Holy Grail for job seekers, though part-time positions are still appreciated. Temporary positions, however, are quite often neglected. When looking for a long-term job, many people fear that temp positions are a short-term fix.
There is no need to fear temp jobs. Skipping over these positions can cause you to miss out on great opportunities. Before you limit your employment search, consider the benefits that temporary positions can hold.
Gain valuable work experience
Anything that provides you with work experience is well worth your time. Temp jobs can teach you just as much as any other type of position. You will add to your skill set and your resume, which can increase your hiring potential. One of the greatest benefits of temporary positions is the flexibility. Instead of learning only one set of skills, you will be able to learn a large variety of new competencies. You may end up developing an interest in a new career path.
Can lead to a job offer
Just because it says “temporary” in the job description doesn’t mean that you have no chance of being hired full-time. If you do an amazing job, there’s a chance that the company might decide to keep you. Even if they don’t have an open position now, that doesn’t mean that one might not come available. If you prove what an accomplished employee you are, you could get a call when a position opens up.
Networking opportunities
Whether or not you get hired, a temp job can provide excellent networking opportunities. The people that you work with can act as mentors, future references or help you connect with other professionals in your desired field. Even if you aren’t going to be at a particular office for a long time, make certain to connect with your peers and superiors. When you leave, keep in touch with the people that you met to keep the connection strong.
Help you get hired elsewhere
The truth is, it is much more difficult to get hired if you aren’t working at all. Unfortunate though it may be, unemployed job-seekers often face more adversity than their employed counterparts when it comes to finding work. Temp jobs show other potential employers that you are actively seeking a new position. It also helps keep your skills up to date so you are ready for the next opportunity,
Keep your spirits up
It can be really disheartening to spend so much time job-hunting without seeing results. Working in a temporary capacity is much better than sitting at home in your pajamas looking for work. It can also lessen anxiety about money since you’ll be bringing home a paycheck. Don’t let temp jobs scare you. Move pass the word “temporary” and focus on “job.” That is the most important part.
