Do Not Follow A Path To Nowhere

For those of you who drive, remember the last time you got behind a slow-moving vehicle such as a work truck with a large orange sign on the back of it proclaiming:

Do Not Follow Into Work Area

Today, I was reminded of that sign when a caller shared with me how “totally frustrated, overwhelmed and discouraged” he is with his job search. I asked him what he wanted to do occupationally and he said he had no idea other than he needed to get his résumé updated as what he was using “wasn’t working.” He further explained that he had received some “group training” several months ago when he lost his job that “to date, has led me to nowhere.”  Not only did the caller have no idea what he wanted to do, he also, by his own admission, had no idea of how to get the career transition process started.

If, by chance, you have been following career directions that seem to be leading you on a path to nowhere, perhaps it is time to embrace a ‘do not follow’ line of thinking if what you have been “told” isn’t working for you. It is never too late to start over in your job search if what you have been doing is simply not doing anything for you. Perhaps now is the time to…

Reset.

Regroup.

Go back to square one.

Do first things first.

Build a solid career transition team of people you know, like and trust.

Analyze yourself. Totally. Completely. Thoroughly. Honestly.

Do some soul-searching.

Apply yourself fully to the career transition project.

Know your flaws, shortcomings, weaknesses and liabilities.

Know your assets, value, strengths, and competitive advantage.

Identify your contributions, bottom-line results, achievements and successes in your career to date.

Know your competition; know what you’re up against to the best of your ability.

Explore various occupational areas of interest.

Be a super sleuth

Be a diligent detective in your quest for clues, leads and ideas of what path to follow next.

Identify your best, most realistic options.

Create a blueprint, a roadmap, a pathway which will lead you from where you are now to where you hope and expect to go.

Do market research.

Discover new trends, latest developments, innovations, changes in areas of particular interest.

Do your due diligence.

Make a comprehensive list of “Things To Do To Keep Me Motivated” and rely upon the list when you have zero motivation for your job search.

Ask good questions.

Don’t stop asking questions until you get the answers you need.

Do not give up.

Do not stay overwhelmed, frustrated and discouraged.

If you are stuck in a rut, get competent career management help.

Do not follow a path to nowhere.

You deserve a whole lot better than that.

For sure.
