When my sister and I were little, we didn’t have many toys. What we lacked in toys, we made up for in make-shift creations. For example, we created our very own Frog Fishing Kit. It consisted of the following components:
1. One very long stick – the approximate length of a fishing pole.
2. Binder twine mostly used for hay-baling purposes.
3. An empty Folgers® coffee can.
4. Nails
5. Hammer
We would spend hours looking for the perfect stick to serve as the fishing pole. Once found, we then tied twine to the smallest end of the stick to suffice as the fishing line. The hammer and nails were used to pound holes in the bottom of the coffee can so the pond water would drain out. Once the holes in the can were made, we tied the can to the twine and voilà, a frog fishing kit was born. Not exactly the perfect toy, but for a couple of six and seven year olds, it worked well indeed. Once we got our gear together, we set off on the frog-fishing expedition. We always caught frogs from the ‘little’ pond. Of the four ponds on our property, we were only allowed to frog fish in the smallest one. Once we caught some frogs, we would look at them, talk to them – (no doubt, tried to teach them something!) and then always, let them go back to their home. Go home Frog Fish!
Four ponds and only one place to fish for frogs.
Fast forward to yesterday when I was sharing the frog-fishing story with my client while teaching him about the four places to take his talents -- the four ponds he can seek new employment that is hopefully, good and right for him:
1. Private sector
2. Public sector
3. Non-profit arena
4. Educational arena
Which of these four ponds do you prefer to go fishing? Do you wish to be a big fish in a little pond or a little fish in a big pond.
Ponds. Frogs. Fishing.
Any nibbles yet?
