Not What I Expected

Resume Hello Billie, I am calling to see if you could help me do a résumé.

Sure, sure, how might I be of help to you?

Well, I have been a stay-at-home mom for 12 years and need to get back to work now.

I see.

So, can you help me write a really awesome résumé?

Of course, I’d be happy to help you with that.

But first, I would like to share with you a story.

A story – what kind of story?

This kind…let’s imagine for a moment that you are building a new home.

A new home?

Yes, and let’s further imagine that you do not have any part of the home built, yet you are going to put the roof on today?

Well, why would I put the roof on today if I don’t have the home built?

Exactly.

It’s what job seekers do all the time – write a résumé without first considering the merits of building a solid foundation for the project. Sort of like putting the roof on your new home without first building a strong foundation.

Huh – I just thought I’d throw together a résumé – or I mean I would hire you to throw it together.

I will be happy to build a very fine résumé for you, but let’s do first things first.

First, let’s introduce you to you and begin the process of helping you understand the product you – your brand – what you’re made of – what value you offer to an employer.

Well, I guess that really does make some sense – I just never thought of it like that – me being a brand and all…that’s just not what I expected.

Things have really changed since I last needed a résumé.

Yes, indeed. Things have really changed.
