Road trip! Takeoff time: 5:52 A.M. -------> Des Moines, Kansas City, Emporia, Wichita, Oklahoma City, Denton, Dallas, Ennis, Waco, Austin, Fredericksburg, Luckenbach, San Antonio, Gonzales, Morales, Houston, Galveston.
I fondly remember when our children were little and they'd start asking as soon as the tire tread hit the interstate: "Are we there yet?" Their question persisted throughout the duration of the trip -- short ride or long, minutes or hours -- it didn't matter; they still wanted to be told how much longer the trip would take.
While our children are now grown, I routinely hear similar-sounding questions from job hunters regarding the job search journey -- persistent questions in the form of:
~ How long will my job search last?
~ Are there any shortcuts?
~ I don't know what path to take; what should I do?
~ I feel stuck; should I stay or should I leave this job?
~ Seems like I'm constantly running into roadblocks; is this normal?
~ Where's the best place to get started when looking for work?
~ Where's the best place to find a j-o-b?
~ How do you know if you're on the right track?
~ Can you tell me how to get from Point A to Point B?
~ When can I expect to get a job?
~ I have no idea which direction to turn; I need a map.
~ Very confused on which way to go; can you help?
Regardless of the type of road trip you may be on, set forth a path and a plan. Ask for directions. Do some research. Get a good map. Chart your course. Rely on GPS as one resource -- not the resource; from first-hand experience, I have learned than a cell battery runs dry (or can't get a signal) and Lucy's GPS accuracy is only as good as her programming. Do not get frustrated when you get lost. Stay cool. Stay calm. Maybe you will go the wrong way for quite a while and realize the job search road you're traveling is not the one you need to take. Do not give up or get discouraged until you reach your intended destination!
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I -- I took the one less travelled by. And that has made all the difference. - Robert Frost
