Today, Simply Hired released its February job trends report highlighting national and local market outlooks, and industry and employer trends.

Hiring across the nation continued its slow start in the second month of the year. Job openings increased 3.8 percent from January 2011, with a year-over-year improvement of 49.7 percent from February 2010.

Five of the most populous metro areas posted very minimal growth in comparison to smaller metros. Both New York and the San Francisco Bay Area had slight decreases in job openings (-0.9 percent and -1.5 percent), while Los Angeles, Chicago and Philadelphia each had less than 3 percent (2.7 percent, 2.5 percent and 0.1 percent, respectively). Cleveland & Akron had the largest monthly growth, at 11.5 percent.

Most industries, 17 of 18, had positive increases in job openings, with only the Technology industry taking a slight dip of -2 percent. Several industries had substantial growth in February, with Military (22.7 percent), Travel (20.9 percent) and Agriculture (20.0 percent) leading in increases.
