28 February 2011Job Seeker’s Week in Review

The week in job seeker news and recruitment updates from around the Web:

On Thursday the Northern Echo reported 800 jobs could be created following the sale of a Corus steel plant to Thailand’s largest steelmaker SSI. The deal, worth £291m, is to be finalised at the end of March and could mean the doubling of the current 700-strong workforce at Corus Teesside Cast Products site in Redcar, and the news gets better -- recruitment has already begun. This week there were renewed calls for more women to be granted seats in corporate boardrooms, as a damning report released by Lord Davies shows UK businesses are doing very little to meet equality commitments put in motion. The Government-commissioned review found that target that 1 in 4 board members should be female has yet to be reached. The Press Association (via The Independent) reports that the commission suggests companies should set renewed targets for 2013 and 2015 to ensure that more talented and gifted women can get into the top jobs, but it stopped short of recommending quotas be put in place. The Mirror reports this week on the Have a Go scheme which encourages trying out different job skill sectors. Across the country from Monday, colleges, schools, training providers and universities will be organising their own Have a Go mini ‘taster sessions’ to give you the chance to try out different jobs.On our own blog, we looked at the importance of attending job fairs, how to start your new job off on the right foot, and as National Apprenticeship Week (February 8-12) came and went, we asked the question: why aren’t apprenticeships engaging youth in the UK?
