BLSicon Last Friday's release of the BLS Employment Situation Summary found that the unemployment fell by 0.4% to 9.4% in December, with 103,000 nonfarm jobs added. Over the course of the month, the number of unemployed decreased by 556,000 people. Over the year, the number of unemployed people decreased by 700,000 and the unemployment rate by 0.5%.

Leisure and hospitality, as well as healthcare and temporary services, increased in employment in December. Leisure and Hospitality jobs increased by 47,000, with a majority of the increase in food service jobs at food and drink places, which added 25,000 jobs. Meanwhile, healthcare, which has continued to trend upward throughout the recession and recovery period, added 36,000 jobs in December. Job gains in that industry were found in ambulatory service jobs (+21,000), hospital jobs (+8,000), nursing and residential care facilities jobs (+7,000). In addition, temporary services jobs increased by 16,000 in December.

Disappointing to find in the report were the increases in the number of discouraged workers, up 389,000 to 1.3 million, those marginally attached to the workforce, up 78,000 to 2.6 million, and the total number of people who are currently unemployed but want a job, up 223,000 to 6.4 million.
