January 06, 2011Simply Hired Releases December Job Trends Report

Today, Simply Hired released its December job trends report highlighting national and local market outlooks, and industry and employer trends.

Job openings across the U.S. decreased 4.4 percent from November, a typical slow-down in the last weeks of the year as employers will resume hiring after the holidays. Despite the month-over-month decline, the market remained improved from last year, up 69.4 percent.

Twelve of 16 industries decreased in job openings in December, mirroring the 17 of 24 occupation categories that also experienced a decline. This lull in hiring is a continuation of the trend seen in November, when four non-retail industries posted negative changes in job openings.

Although job openings in most industries declined this month, the hospitality industry showed a notable increase of 8.7 percent. The industry, which includes restaurants, hotels and similar businesses, likely experienced growth due to the holiday season.

Forty-nine of 50 major metropolitans experienced a decline in job openings this month, with only the Miami & Fort Lauderdale area showing a slight positive growth of 0.6 percent. This lull in hiring is typical at a year’s end.
