HRC Rolls Out Transgender Job-Seeker Program « The SIRIUS XM OutQ ...

The Human Rights Campaign is launching a program next month aimed at helping transgender job seekers who face high hurdles in the job market.

HRC’s Associate Director of Diversity Allyson Robinson says The ‘Back to Work’ project is designed to help transgender people who are either unemployed or underemployed to find jobs that match their skills. The plan is to take the program nationwide, with the first free seminar set to take place on February 26th and 27th in Boston, hosted by the AIDS Action Committee of Massachusetts.

ROBINSON: “Success on February 28th for me is easy, and that is, you know, we have a group of transgender people who have been looking for help and looking for answers to these really difficult questions, that now have that help and have the answers that they need and have the confidence to go out and make the most of this job market and find work that can support them and is fulfilling to them.”

Robinson tells OutQ News that participants will learn how to create a resume, search the job market, build a network, and properly interview for a position.

She says transgender adults experience unemployment at TWICE the rate of others. And, she says about 97 percent of surveyed trans people said they experienced harassment at the workplace.

Robinson says they’re hoping to have about 75 attendees, with the first 30 registrants receiving free additional training from a career coach.
