A client called me and asked if I had watched the 99ers segment on 60 Minutes last Sunday evening. Are you a 99er? Have you been unemployed for a 99-week period of time, or longer? Are you wondering what to do next? While I have no magic answers, I can share with you a couple of ideas that start with R & B, though not of the rhythm & blues variety.
Which R of career transition is for you? Replace the job you had with the same or similar type of job? Reinvent yourself? Retrain for a different line of work? Retire? Here's a brief description of the four choices:
REPLACE ~ this choice simply means that if you are, or have been, a research scientist, for example, that you will continue to pursue new opportunities as a research scientist. If, after a while (you define while), research opportunities do not avail themselves to you or you are not in a position to relocate, perhaps it is time to consider the below-stated R of Reinvent yourself.
REINVENT YOURSELF ~ this could be a good choice if you wish to pursue a new path, a new career, a new option using some or a few of the skills you have previously used. Maybe you held a job as an architect and now you wish to pursue real estate development. What skills, what experience, what gifts, talents, and abilities can you transfer from your past to launch you anew into the future? What skills might you acquire to allow you to pursue this option?
RETRAIN~ this choice is preferred by some and usually requires a return to the classroom, online or offline, for either a short or more extended period of time to earn another credential, degree, certificate, or specialty training to lead you into a new field of endeavor.
RETIRE~ this choice is one that is also pursued by some. In my practice, I have witnessed time and again professionals who 'take early retirement' only to return to the workplace in a new capacity to generate revenue, or in some cases, to serve in an unpaid volunteer role.

Bs of Business
Consider the three Bs of career options: buy, build, or be in a business as an employee or contractor. All have pros and cons. (#tweet from Happy About the Career Alphabet).
B1: Buy a Business ~ For some, buying a business is the way to go; the business blueprint is in place and for a price, the business can be yours. One day you step in, take over and run it 24/7 as you see fit per the terms of your purchase agreement.
B2: Build a Business ~ For others, building a business is the preferred way to go. Often, the cash required to get started is less than choice B1 (above). You build it, you make the mistakes, you learn the lessons, you generate revenues, you enjoy the profits (however great or humble)...along with the 24/7 'blood, sweat and tears' that it takes to build a business.
B3: Be in a Business~ For some, working with and for an employer is the preferred method to earn a living. By being in a business, I am referring to a more traditional employer / employee type of relationship where you receive a paycheck and may have some of your benefits paid for by the employer. Another consideration, for some, is to serve as an independent contractor to support the mission and goals of a business. (Some of my clients also refer to this 'arrangement' as a Project Manager). As an independent contractor, (or project manager) you will be responsible for payment of health care benefits, taxes, etc.
Regardless of the R & B career transition options you may consider, continue to do your very best to explore all of the possibilities you can dream, imagine, create or invent to enhance the chances of getting back to work as soon as possible. In my opinion the 2nd "R" is the best. Its probably what everyone should do periodically. It's not necessary that you are changing careers but reinventing yourself will help you in your current job as well.

Option B1 is appropriate if you have the money and you are teachable. Option B2 is difficult. One need to research the market for feasible business ideas and this is not always easy. In addition one would need to acquire some business skills to succeed in business.
